LGBTQ+ Unity Summit

The Illinois Diversity Council recognizes that Pride is Transformational! Recent demographic polling shows nearly a quarter to upwards of a third of Gen Z now identifies using non-gendered pronouns like they/them. Other research shows a fifth of Gen Z self-identifying as LGBTQ, with the potential of comprising 10 to 15 percent of the total adult population in the near future. This represents a dramatic increase from the recent historical data. Only 3.5 percent of adults, according to Gallup polling, identified as LGBTQ in 2012, for example. For our annual LGBTQ+ Unity Summit we’ll dive into some of the most compelling conversions such as the expansion of Neopronouns, an exploration of how you embed pronoun sharing as authentic and not a performative part of 'rainbow washing' in your organization and building a practice of pronoun respect and sharing with colleagues, This encompasses ethical accountability for apologizing and doing better when you mess up, because we all mess up. Then we’ll cover changes in Intersectionality as a concept that has been rapidly adopted in recent years as a tool for leveraging more equitable outcomes in corporations. Exploring how an analysis of race, class, ethnicity, and other formulations of difference are important to understanding intra-group complexities in the LGBTQ+ community. A competency for celebrating differences with deeper compassion and admiration is key to creating a more equitable workplace to push the boundaries of your current knowledge on what it means to be a part of and support this vast community. Finally, let’s renew our minds with practical tips for designing policies and aligning workplace culture to create an environment of psychological safety to support and affirm members of the community. Delving into regulatory changes that have occurred in recent years at the federal and state levels, best practices as they relate to constructing a welcoming and inclusive environment, and solutions to common problems that may arise regarding these topics. A holistic understanding on how to move forward with law, cultural, policy, and leadership efforts. Through a culmination of these elements, we’re highlighting the true transformation during Pride Month.
